Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter (for laminating)
  • 7 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for filling)
  • Glaze: powdered sugar, milk or lemon juice

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. In another bowl, mix warm milk with yeast; let it foam.
  2. Add egg and yeast mixture to the dry ingredients; mix until combined and knead for about 6-8 minutes.
  3. Chill dough for 30 minutes. Prepare the butter block by shaping cold butter into an 8-inch square.
  4. Roll out dough into a 16-inch square; place butter block in center and fold corners over it.
  5. Roll into a rectangle and fold into thirds; chill for another 30 minutes. Repeat this rolling and folding two more times.
  6. Cut dough into squares, fill with cream cheese mixture, shape as desired.
  7. Let rise on baking sheets while preheating oven to 390°F (200°C). Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool completely before glazing with powdered sugar mixed with milk or lemon juice.
